Why is oil used in a transformer?

Oil is used because it provides both excellent electrical insulation and efficient heat removal. It fills voids within insulation, prevents partial discharge, suppresses arcing, and transfers heat away from windings. This combination allows transformers to operate safely at high voltages and power densities.
