Field repair begins with locating the leak source such as gaskets, valves, radiators, weld seams, or bushing interfaces. The area is cleaned, oil level is managed to reduce pressure at the leak point, and temporary containment is placed to prevent environmental release. Repairs may include tightening flanges, replacing gaskets, resealing fittings, applying approved sealants for minor seepage, or welding for structural defects during an outage. After repair, oil level is restored, air is removed if needed, and oil is sampled to confirm moisture and dielectric condition remain acceptable.

Oil must meet limits for dielectric strength, moisture, acidity, oxidation stability, and cleanliness.

в отговор на: When should a dielectric test for transformer oil be performed? #2694

Dielectric tests are performed during commissioning, after oil treatment, following repairs, after transportation, and periodically during service. Testing is also required when moisture ingress or abnormal operation is suspected.

They ensure accuracy by using clean, standardized containers, correct valve adapters, and procedures that prevent moisture ingress, particle contamination, and gas loss. DGA bottles minimize headspace and prevent gas diffusion. Labels and chain of custody forms reduce mixups and preserve data integrity. Proper flushing and controlled fill speed reduce trapped air. Many kits also include spill control and PPE, supporting safe sampling. Consistent kit use improves repeatability, which is essential for trending and reliable interpretation.

The priority is containment to stop migration. On soil, responders build berms, deploy absorbent pads, and excavate contaminated material for disposal or treatment. If oil reaches water, booms are placed to contain the slick and skimmers or absorbents are used for recovery. Storm drains are blocked and runoff is controlled. Samples of soil and water are collected to define the affected area. Notifications to environmental authorities are typically required and remediation must follow approved plans and cleanup standards.

Transformer oil is generally not permitted for use as fuel due to environmental and safety regulations. Many transformer oils, especially older ones, may contain hazardous substances such as PCBs. Disposal or reuse is strictly regulated under environmental laws. Only certified recycling or re-refining processes are allowed, and unauthorized burning can result in severe legal penalties and environmental harm.
