Bio based transformer oils, such as natural ester fluids, offer high fire points, excellent biodegradability, and lower environmental impact compared to mineral oil. They also have good moisture tolerance, which can slow paper insulation aging. These advantages make them suitable for urban, indoor, and environmentally sensitive installations.

The oil commonly used is mineral insulating oil, often specified under standards such as IEC 60296. Depending on application, natural ester, synthetic ester, or silicone insulating fluids may also be used. The selected oil must meet dielectric, thermal, chemical, and environmental requirements defined by transformer design and operating conditions.

DGA „limits“ are usually applied as guidance bands rather than a single universal pass fail value, because they depend on transformer type, age, loading history, and oil volume. Standards and guides such as IEEE and IEC methods classify gases and rate severity based on concentrations and trends, focusing on key fault gases like hydrogen, methane, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. Interpretation emphasizes trending and ratios, not just one snapshot.

Standard oil testing evaluates dielectric performance, contamination, and aging chemistry. Key parameters include BDV, moisture content, dissipation factor, resistivity, acidity, interfacial tension, and DGA for fault gases. DGA is central to condition monitoring and is commonly tied to standardized approaches such as ASTM D3612. Many programs add inhibitor content, particle count, color, and furan analysis. The parameters are interpreted together because one result rarely tells the whole story: for example low BDV often correlates with high moisture or particles, while rising acidity often correlates with falling interfacial tension and increasing tan delta.

Oil removes heat from the windings and core and transports it to radiators or coolers where it is released to air or water. It also improves thermal contact by filling voids and ensuring uniform temperature distribution. By keeping hot spot temperature under control, oil protects cellulose insulation from accelerated aging and preserves transformer loading capability. In addition, oil circulation supports cooling during transient overloads and helps stabilize operating temperature across varying ambient conditions.

Selection starts with transformer design approval and required insulating liquid category, then considers voltage level, thermal loading, and cooling system capability. Site constraints drive choices such as higher fire point fluids for indoor or urban locations and biodegradable fluids for environmentally sensitive zones. Compatibility with paper insulation, seals, paints, and existing oil is checked, especially for retrofills. Standards compliance and utility specifications set minimum dielectric, moisture, acidity, and oxidation stability requirements. Finally, lifecycle factors are evaluated: monitoring strategy, filtration capability, spill containment, procurement availability, and total cost of ownership.
