The transformer steps up low-voltage AC input to a high-voltage secondary output. This voltage is applied across ignition electrodes, creating an electrical arc when the voltage overcomes air resistance. The arc produces a hot spark that ignites the oil mist in the combustion chamber. Continuous or intermittent sparking is controlled by the furnace ignition system during startup and operation.
