Dielectric strength is tested by applying an increasing AC voltage across standardized electrodes immersed in an oil sample. The voltage is raised at a controlled rate until electrical breakdown occurs. Several breakdown measurements are taken on the same sample, and the average value is reported as the BDV. This test reflects oil cleanliness, moisture level, and suitability for insulation service.
