Power transformers hum primarily due to magnetostriction, a phenomenon where the core material changes shape slightly when subjected to a magnetic field. This mechanical vibration generates sound waves, producing the characteristic humming noise. Additionally, electromagnetic forces acting on the windings and other components can contribute to this noise. While humming is normal, excessive noise may indicate issues such as loose components or core saturation, which should be investigated.
