Procedures start with controlled sampling to avoid air ingress and contamination. In the lab, oil is tested for breakdown voltage, moisture, acidity, interfacial tension, resistivity, and dissipation factor using standardized methods. For DGA, gases are extracted from oil by vacuum or headspace techniques and measured with gas chromatography. The lab reports individual gas concentrations and ratios used for diagnostics. Quality assurance includes calibration, reference standards, duplicate samples, and strict sample handling documentation.

High-voltage transformers typically use mineral insulating oils, natural ester oils, or synthetic ester oils. Mineral oil is the most common due to its good dielectric strength, thermal performance, and cost-effectiveness. Natural ester oils, derived from vegetable sources, offer higher fire points and improved environmental biodegradability, making them suitable for densely populated or environmentally sensitive areas. Synthetic esters provide excellent thermal stability and moisture tolerance, often used in high-risk or indoor HV installations where fire safety and long service life are critical.
