Step-down transformers do not inherently use a lot of power; instead, they are designed to reduce voltage while increasing current. The power input to a transformer is approximately equal to the power output, minus losses due to heat and inefficiencies. Therefore, while they facilitate the transfer of electrical energy at lower voltages, their power consumption is primarily determined by the load connected to them rather than the transformer itself.
