Dielectric strength is usually tested with a BDV set using standardized electrodes and a controlled voltage rise. An oil sample is placed in a test cell, voltage is increased until breakdown occurs, and the breakdown value is recorded. Multiple consecutive tests are performed and averaged to reduce randomness. Low results indicate moisture, particles, or aging by products and typically lead to filtration or further lab testing.
