Oil type transformers use insulating oil for cooling and insulation allowing higher ratings and better heat dissipation especially at high voltage. Dry type transformers use air and solid insulation offering better fire safety and lower environmental risk. Oil type units are preferred outdoors and for high MVA while dry type units are common indoors.
