An open circuit test in a transformer is conducted to determine its core losses, primarily hysteresis and eddy current losses, under no-load conditions. During this test, one winding (usually the high voltage side) is connected to the rated voltage while the other winding is left open. The test measures the input voltage, current, and power, allowing engineers to assess the transformer’s efficiency and performance characteristics without the influence of load.
