Common methods include a mechanical oil level indicator on the conservator, magnetic level gauges, sight glasses, and float based indicators with electrical contacts for alarm and trip. Some transformers use pressure vacuum gauges combined with temperature compensation, and modern units may use electronic level sensors feeding SCADA. Best practice is to trend level versus temperature and compare against expected expansion curves, because a single level reading without temperature context can be misleading.
