The difference affects safety, installation location, rating capability, and maintenance strategy. Oil type transformers offer superior cooling and higher MVA capability but require spill containment, oil testing, and fire risk management. Dry type transformers eliminate oil related hazards and are preferred indoors, in buildings, and near people, but they are larger, noisier, and limited in power rating. Choosing the wrong type can increase operational risk, capital cost, or space requirements, making the distinction critical in grid and facility design.
