DBDS, a sulfur compound, can decompose and form corrosive sulfur species that react with copper conductors, producing conductive copper sulfide deposits. These deposits reduce dielectric margins and can cause catastrophic transformer failures. Because the process can occur silently over time, utilities strictly control DBDS levels and specify non-corrosive oils or use passivators where permitted.
